Student Success: Teen's Braces Saves His Life
Most kids wear their braces grudgingly. The pay-off for the pain is usually a long time coming and teens aren't known for their patience. But there is at least one kid who got more than he bargained for from his braces, and he didn't have to wait years for it.
Police in Pontiac, Michigan say that 18-year-old Anthony Pittman's braces probably saved his young life. Pittman was among a group of teens who got into an argument that turned into a gunfight. At least three different weapons were fired and a bullet from one of them - a .45 caliber - hit Pittman in the mouth. Police believe that Pittman survived the injury because his braces fragmented the bullet.

Student Success: 11 year old girl saves Seven
Maddie McRae is being hailed a hero whose bravery saved the lives of seven people. After heavy rains washed out a section of roadway, two vehicles, including the one she was riding in with her mother and two siblings, ended up in the river. "I knew what was happening," said the eleven-year-old. "I thought we were going to die because the water was going over our heads. But me and my mom prayed a lot and we knew God could get us through it."
But instead, Maddie managed to get out of the vehicle through the broken windshield, crawl across a tree branch to the shore, and then climb an electric fence to reach a nearby farmhouse. She called 9-1-1 and rescuers were able to pull her family to safety using ladders and ropes. Her mother and siblings were treated at a hospital and released.

Student Success: 15 Year Old Girl Makes History
On Saturday, 15-year-old Kimberly Anyadike finished a record-breaking flight across the country, becoming what is believed to be the youngest African-American female to pilot an airplane from coast to coast. The adventurous teenager flew from Compton Woodley Airport in Compton, CA, to Newport News, VA ,and back, making thirteen stops along the way. Her flight companions were an adult safety pilot and Levi Thornhill, an 87-year-old World War II veteran who flew with the Tuskegee Airmen, an all African-American combat unit in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Part of the reason for Anyadike's voyage was to honor the Tuskegee Airmen, dozens of whom she met throughout the journey

Music Director West Byrd Mentors Students For Birmingham Recording Sessions Thursday, July 16 at BJCC Birmingham, Al.
"Before we did the Atlanta show, the students did not know what to expect. Nervousness had taken control of them. The only thing on their minds was the stress of big cameras, a room full of people, and an expectation to blow everyone's mind beyond expectation.. In the mist of all this they forgot two critical things, BE YOURSELF and HAVE FUN!!! When there is a natural gift within someone, it stands out without being forced. Whether you sing, act, dance, or play an instrument your natural ability is the attribute that thrusts you ahead of your peers. Combine these talents with a A-1 character and personality and you have the formula to the next Hollywood star.Remember you can only give YOUR best so approach with confidence and a determination to succeed".
